B L U R B:
Ava Malone knows all about being broken-hearted.
Born with a severe heart defect, she’s spent her whole life in and out of hospital desperately needing a transplant.
Just days from death, her weak prayers are finally answered, and she receives a new heart; one that not only saves her life, but changes it forever.
Now fit and healthy, Ava is able to do things she only dreamt of, like get a job and some independence, fall in love, and finally live life to the fullest.
But her journey of self-discovery takes her to places she never expected. Along the way, Ava doesn’t just find the woman she was always meant to be, but she also finds out more about the woman who no longer is. The one who gave her this new life because she lost hers.
Faced with a devastating dilemma, Ava must decide whether the heart that’s pumping inside her body now belongs to her, or is still beating for someone else.

Just wow, a beautiful book, through and through, cover to cover, inside and out. When I read the blurb, before this book came out, I have to admit, I was nervous. So scared that this book would wreck me, and break me. But AJ Compton is such an amazing writer I decided to bite the bullet and put my heart in her hands with the the trust that she wouldn't completely smash it to smithereens. :)
I was so afraid that this book would be a story of love and loss. But it was SO MUCH MORE then that. It was a coming of age story of second chances. Not second chance love, but a second chance at LIFE. There are so many inspiring love stories going on in this book, the love between Ava and her best friend Finn is truly heartwarming. Ava falling in love for the first time was just.. the SWEETEST thing. But what touched me the most, was the story of Ava falling head over heels in love with LIFE! It was such a beautiful journey and I'm so thankful I was able to take part in it with her.
Throughout this book, there is the exceptional bonus of being able to read some of the most beautiful poems I've ever read. I'm not an avid poetry reader, have never read a full book of poetry, however the poems in This Old Heart of Mine... they BLEW ME AWAY! They left me breathless and teary eyed. They were just absolutely beautiful!
In one part of This Old Heart of Mine a sweet little girl asks Gabriel what a poet is. Gabriel replies, "Its someone who tells stories like an author, only the stories come from your heart, instead of your head." The little girl tells him, "I wanna be a poet, too." and Gabriel says "You can still be an author and be a poet. Just remember to write your stories from the heart." I LOVED THIS. And AJ Compton, is most definitely an author and a poet. She writes with her whole heart all the way down to her soul. She left it all on the page in this book and its absolutely beautiful! It was an honor to read it, and I hope you all treat yourself to this breathtaking story!

"...His laughter mingles with mine and is absorbed by the stars.
It’s a moment granted to us by people I hope are in the sky above us now, laughing as they look down.
I’m sure others on the ground are staring at the scene we’re making, casting their judgments. But they don’t know us, not like we know us.
They don’t understand the hope in our eyes or the alchemy of our blood.
They don’t know our truth. Our hearts. Our lives.
Lives that we now have the freedom to live or waste.
Once. Twice. Or as many damn times as we like."

A.J. Compton wants a lot of things;
To write books that make you think and feel deeply.
To make you ugly cry and cry with laughter. In the same book.
To write stories that make you anti-social and have you staying up until 4am to finish them.
To show that life can be cruel and difficult, but it can also be incredibly beautiful and worthwhile.
And what A.J. really wants, is to write books that make you remember why you love to read.
AJ knows better than most that we don't always get what we want in life, but is going to give it a damn good try ;)
